THIEVES' MARKET

An unsoftened story of trucks and hauling, marketing and the short armed methods of produce merchants this is focussed on Nick who hopes to have what his Greek father dreamed of and never achieved-wealth. From a packing house and seasonal work, Nick throws in with a trucker, Ed, whose harshness and dishonesty in dealing with the growers Nick cannot stomach. Driving a cargo of apples back to the market, Ed saves Nick's life, loses his own when the other truck catches fire. Nick tries to stand up to Figlia, market dictator, is helped by Tax, a tart out for the money. Figlia, after letting Nick think he has won, sets him mob after Nick, drives him out defeated until Nick learns of Ed's death and sets out for vengeance. Brutal in its unsparing account, this is a companion piece to the earlier Long Haul and strictly masculine in appeal.
