PRINCESS

A thriller about Basque separatists who snatch the Princess of Wales--and then hold her captive while the King of Spain kicks himself for his carelessness. Gooey royal fan-mag fawning blends uneasily with workaday terrorist plotting here as a gang of nasties--showing absolutely no respect for monarchy or motherhood--kidnap Great Britain's most beloved young mum and hold her to further their polical ends. This heartless violence is made possible when King Juan Carlos takes the Princess for a joyride on his majestic motorcycle and rides into an ambush on the Waleses' only night off during their state visit to Spain. It's all the more tragic because Diana and Charles had just recently been able to rebuild their tender, maybe even dewy, relationship following years of nerve-wracking public appearances. Their Hispanic and Britannic Majesties decide that the best thing to do to avoid distressing their beloved subjects is to pass a Spanish fashion model off as the Princess to her adoring fans--while an Anglo-Iberian team of supersoldiers tracks down the real thing, and the double flies off with Charles to open bazaars. The Real Thing, meanwhile, has been locked away without any pop music, but she is holding up, well, royally--even though one of her captors is a hideously marred and frightfully jealous Basquette who is just waiting for the minute she can bring her Highness low. Laughable royal dialogue spoils otherwise adequate action.
