Trifle precious, this light romance of a French doctor and a little Chinese lady in Central China. Beneath her external formalities, she is quite enchanting, clever, impudent, sometimes devilish. She invents ailments to relieve her boredom, and a Madame Butterfly theme is ironically handled, with a rather unprecedented and moving farewell. Pleasant reading -- a nice translation from the French.
