Sixth title in the Professional Writers' Library, this again is not for the beginner or amateur, for its survey and examination of the scientific approaches to readability are for furthering the effectiveness and efficiency in communicating with the reader. The working writer will find here a sketch of the background for, and history of readability research, of the reader- audience they wish to reach and an explanation of readability formulas together with their application, their advantages and limitations. This combination of the statistical and psychological aspects of language, the analysis and development of work skills and the place they have in a writer's equipment does not however argue that writing is a science; the authors are firm that it is still an art, and that the observations science has made on the craft cannot make a writer, only help him. Writing courses, and laboratories, editors, instructors will find this a worthwhile assemblage of recent, and past, work in readability.
