THE POSITION OF AMERICA and Other Essays

The long unity among American nations in contrast to the disunity of Europe is the central theme of this group of philosophical essays by a Mexican man of letters. The title piece examines this ""new culture in a war-ravaged world; other essays pay tribute to the native poetry of New Spain, to an early Mexican poet Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, to a late Mexican poet, Luis G. Urbina. An essay of exceptional beauty deals with the enchanted Valley of Mexico with its New World Venice into which Cortes stumbled -- Vision of Anahuac. A handsome format, modern in feel, scarcely justifies so high (and limiting) a price for 172 page volume of essays.
