And yet the biographer has succeeded in making the subject interesting, from the boyhood, when he was imbued with fervor for a protective navy by his father, Captain Perry, through his appointment as midshipman at 1, fifteen years of increasing responsibility and absorption of naval theory, the heartbreaking efforts to prepare against England -- and Lake Erie....Good reference and supplementary material, though uninspired in style.
