DINNER AT BELMONT

Skillful and dramatic tale, historical fiction set in Tennessee of the Civil War days, with military background, plenty of action and a light romance. The period covered approximates that of The Army of the Tennessee, though this is written as fiction, with emphasis on characterization rather than strategy. Smoothly done, consistently interesting, with good screen possibilities. You get a picture of beseiged Nashville, and the bravery of the cultivated Southerners in adjusting themselves to war conditions. Dialogue rings true -- the plot is well-knit -- there's an underlying philosophic tone that contributes to the effectiveness. The story hinges on the gathering of a dinner party.
