REPAIRMEN WILL GET YOU IF YOU DON'T WATCH OUT

In view of the new economics of conserving machines already in use, this is a disturbing and revealing bit of consumer research, hitting a timely market. It is authentic testimony as to the fallibility of repairmen for automobiles, radios, watches, typewriters, vacuum cleaners, electric irons -- and the gullibility of the American public. Investigators for Reader's Digest selected a foolproof problem -- took it to garagemen the country over and found 3/5 dishonest in diagnosis. Further research disclosed 64% incompetent in radio repairs, 50% untruthful in watch repairs, 98% gypping on typewriters, and a reasonably good record of correct handling of vacuum cleaners and irons. The woman investigator was ""done"" more often than the man, with repairmen getting tough. The report brought in nationwide correspondence. Suggestions are offered for future public attitudes to do away with bungling workmanship, overcharging and gypping. A smart idea for today's market.
