TO IRELAND, WITH LOVE

A captivating clutch of poems written by the wife of the Ambassador to Ireland in 1961-62, looks upon cityscape and countryside, city and country folk. In Dublin, a bookstall on Nassau Street, the houses of Fitzwilliam Square, the treasures of Savage's, catch the eye. At home in Phoenix Park, there is Bridget shelling peas, or the grave meeting of the deer in twilight. Official duties call forth an ode to the calling card and a lament over not being able to speak French fluently at an embassy dinner. Mrs. Stockdale has a way about her--that enables her to catch the speech of varied Irish characters, glimpse their hearts-- and touch ours with a flash of Ireland's beauty. Fresh sentiment without sentimentality... inviting.
