Rosabel's secret is Granny Meg, an herb-brewing, loving crone who's a fugitive from the poorhouse in a deserted hut close to where Rosabel herds cows from sunup to sundown all summer long. The eleven-year-old girl, having previously passed the time in conversation with the cattle, is glad of company. They communicate, Granny in some sort of British dialect, Rosabel in Minnesotan. The secret is let out one stormy night when Mother is sick and only Granny can save her. A bovine bit of molasses nostalgia.
