ONCE THE MULLAH

A collection of Persian folk tales made while the author was in Iran is delightful reading and furthers her record as a skillful story teller (see Racing the Red Sail 1947, Ricardo's White Horse 1948 etc.). The stories are about Mullah Nasr-ed Din (Mullah being the name for a priest who acts as teacher and judge), a favorite character and butt of jokes. As they go- as the Mullah is tricked in a bargain, cheated out of dinner by his wife's friends, made a laughing stock of the market place- he emerges as a kind of ""absentminded professor"", but dignified and not without his own last laughs. Try them at story hour- the exotic setting adds to the feel of Eastern humor.
