JEREMY BEAN'S ST. PATRICK'S DAY

Embarrassed because he forgot to wear green for his class's St. Patrick's Day party, Jeremy is helped by an unexpected new friend. Such events loom large in a five- or six-year-old world. Jeremy is so excited by the party that he wears his green sweater to bed, only to take it off in the middle of the night because he's too hot; beneath the covers, it's forgotten in the morning rush. Teased by the other children, he hides in a closet, where he's discovered by the principal, who is wise enough to wait for Jeremy to confide his problem in his own time, loans him a green bow-tie, and comes along to the party. Schertle's clear prose and sympathetic observation of small children and their concerns are well-matched by Shute's realistic full-color illustrations depicting with easy humor the kids in a cheerful suburban school. This should be handy not only for St. Patrick's Day but for its message about making friends with principals and other scary adults.
