Karabair, the inhospitable mountain country of Thrace, is geologically interesting and in a small village there a window is broken, a plan purloined, a guard chloroformed and a quiet schoolteacher arrested. But a counterespionage agent is sent and Zakhov's mission is accomplished with a precise and astringent attention to detail. While the story is not too developed, the background comes off well in the foreground.
