LIVE AND HELP LIVE

The authors of Managing Your Mind formulate a practical philosophy which they analyze as ""a realistic idealism"" and go on to describe the various motivations and mechanisms which make you act as you do and which will help you to act as you should. Believing that your values should be based on three principles-intelligence, good will and integrity- they point the way in which you can acquire intellectual objectivity, emotional stability and security and maturity. The bulk of this book is popular psychology which will facilitate your understanding of the derivation of your attitudes and the many mechanisms which consciously or unconsciously control your conduct; these mechanisms include attention-getting, identification, sex, rationalization, escapes and aggressions of all kinds, guilt and projection, etc. And closing chapters deal with psychosomatic symptoms, your approach to your children, to work and to recreation. A rather extensive elaboration of behavior principles and responses (with case illustration), this is not on the more obvious self-help level but offers a most substantial source of self-understanding.
