THE HAUNTED PORTRAIT

Marty inherits a huge old place (worth eight million, would you believe) in Williamstown, Mass., on the condition that she stay there for three years which becomes harder and harder to do. Her ancestors had a tragic relationship--her marriage isn't much better or so it seems--and there are slashed paintings, a ruby ring that leaves stigmata, along with nonevidential karmic influences. The story reads better than it sounds; it's billed as ""romantic suspense"" which eliminates using that other designation even if it's clairwritten with a modern frame of reference for the same audience. That's at least something.
