This is one of Ann Bridge's endemic entertainments featuring Bless you's, Nannies, idiomatic French and ""the wonder girl"" With the ""beaux yeux"" which are very observant--namely the Sempiternal Julia Probyn, now widowed. Allusions to her husband's death on an intelligence mission and without a respirator cause her to make the tie-up in Madeira between the sheep which show signs of nerve gas poisoning and the visitation of an offshore trawler. When she says, ""C'est idiot"" any younger reader might believe her but then there are older ones who enjoy these outings in foreign parts which retain all their garden party tone.
