Look at this is virtually a syllabus of South American history, and you will not be disappointed. ""That he who runs may read""- not a book for those who want a more colorful, profound, philosophical and analytical study. Well defined outlines, filled in,- social, historical economic -- 7/8 of it a vast canvas of the past, whit a very brief section on the present. A simplification of a complex pattern,-ancient civilizations and culture, the conquests by the Spaniards, the parallel progress of Peru, Brazil and Chile; the successive governments, rulers; and the revolutions that led to independence and step by step progress towards individual nations. Longmans' publication, The Pageant of Chinese History (Seeger) has proved a standard basic book. This book may do likewise, and serve as a springboard to more searching studies of a contemporary Americ. One could wish that space had permitted more color and drama and human interest.
