Remember the old folktale about the animal who falls into a hole? As he can't get out by himself, he tricks a string of other animals to come in with him, then climbs on their backs to get out. Rockwell's trickster is a cat; her trickees are a goose, a goat, and an elephant; her minimal easy-reader sentences repetitive and choppy; her pictures similarly elementary and uninteresting. In this version the cat tricks the elephant into picking him up with his trunk and throwing him out; then all the others fly or climb out too, making for an all's-well ending as bland as Rockwell's style.
