MR. PERCY'S MAGIC GREENHOUSE

Mr. Percy and his dog, Pumpkin, have a secret: at the bottom of their very British garden, the greenhouse transports them to a jungle fraught with dangerous animals. The tigers and elephants are friendly, but the crocodiles threaten to devour them. They are saved by monkeys who pelt the crocodiles with mangoes--just what Mr. Percy wanted to take home to make jam. This unexceptional, slight story does sport illustrations of some merit: Mr. Percy's garden has lush, gigantic blooms and mice swinging from heads of wheat; the jungle is vividly voluptuous, its denizens arrestingly bold. And the curious neighbor who peers over the fence adds a touch of mystery. But for jungle visits of more interest, try Steig's Zabajaba Jungle (p. 1522; C-258) or Yorinks' Hey, Al (1986).
