I fancied myself quite a Sherlock Holmes expert, but retire defeated from reading this book. One has to know not only the stories, but the references to other stories (most of which were only references and never appeared) and the fine points of method etc., to appreciate the unravelling of the various interrelated episodes which comprise this case. A group of Holmes' addicts are collected to supervise the screening of The Spotted Band. Each one is suspect when the scenario writer is apparently murdered and spirited away; each one has adventures following in modern form situations suggested or described in Doyle's works. I found it involved, difficult reading, and forced. Give me a straight thriller -- or the original master himself.
