by Armstrong Sperry ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1967
After a rambling if short travelogue about the Rio Grande, Mr. Sperry recreates the rough romance of the region focusing on New Mexico. The story spans the prehistoric ages to the present day with stops at the highlights. It includes famous people and places--Coronado's search for the Seven Cities of Cibola, Kit Carson's exploits as a mountain man, Robert Oppenheimer's organization of Los Alamos. Less well known, but no less intriguing, there's the Lincoln County War startling Billy the Kid, among others, of which Lew Wallace said: ""If I wish to enforce justice, it Will be necessary to hang the entire population""; and Elfego Baca's lonely stand against a posse of cowboys in Frisco...""The Southwest of pioneer days was man's country"" and understandably did not appeal to women; but this should not discourage the girls of today who along with the boys want a readable history of New Mexico which retains much of its integral excitement.
