UGOSLAV MYSTERY

Fourteen year old Josef Piri and his grandfather are quietly sardine fishing when the book opens. It is the last peaceful moment for the next 36 hours as they are plunged into a rousing tale of intrigue. From out of the dark come shots, a police launch, an escaped, wounded prisoner -- and the chase is on. As the police try to bribe and terrify the small island population into helping them find the prisoner Yanko Piri, Josef's father, long believed to be dead, readers are treated to insight into the reactions of men under pressure. There is loyalty, courage and resourcefulness; there is well intentioned blundering and outright betrayal. All comes out well in the end, but before it does, young readers are going to chew a few nails, sweat a little and thoroughly enjoy themselves.
