As the police try to bribe and terrify the small island population into helping them find the prisoner Yanko Piri, Josef's father, long believed to be dead, readers are treated to insight into the reactions of men under pressure. There is loyalty, courage and resourcefulness; there is well intentioned blundering and outright betrayal. All comes out well in the end, but before it does, young readers are going to chew a few nails, sweat a little and thoroughly enjoy themselves.
