COME WITH ME

In a charming idyll, a little boy imagines what it will be like when his promised puppy is big enough to come home with him. They'll walk through the meadow from the boy's Victorian farmhouse to the sea, where they'll watch the sea lions and look for a perfect shell; on the way back up the hill, he'll carry the puppy if she's tired: ""My legs are longer than yours, you know."" From the rich hues and solid forms of the night scenes in Only the Cat Saw (1985) to the bold, black lines and brilliant, misty colors of Block City (1988), Wolff's illustration has always been innovative and attractive. Here, in another new departure, she works freely in what seems to be watercolor, omitting the vigorous line to convey the shimmering color and light of the California seaside--where the winsome black-and-white pup and sturdy towheaded child visit a calf and a foal; exult in the wind that ""blows across the Pacific, all the way from Japan""; and investigate the carefully depicted coastal flora and fauna. A lovely rendering of a dream about to come true, sure to appeal to both small listeners and their parents.
