FATHER MARQUETTE AND THE GREAT RIVERS

As the author of much historical fiction about the time and territory of Father Marquette (see The Country of The Book. 1992, Land of Sky Blue Waters, 1955), August Derleth was a logical person to choose for this biography. He writes it simply and with devotion for the priest who wanted to be a martyr and a missionary and braved everything to go to the wilds of Canada. The narrative starts when Father Marquette is already a young man on his way to Quebec. There are backflashes to show his former life and the development of his convictions that led him first to Quebec and then to Three Rivers where he stayed to learn as many Indian dialects as possible before he had the good fortune to be sent to the Sault. Then with Joliet down the Mississippi and into virgin territory, he was given the chance to have his dearest hopes come true. Quietly told.
