VICKY AND THE MONKEY PEOPLE

A love of animals sets nine-year-old Vicky apart from some of the boarders at Mrs. Horton's, but draws her together with Colonel Horton and her contemporary, John. Living out the hot season in the highlands of Simla with them are a number of stereotypes: snobbish older girl, kindhearted nursemaid, mean-tempered landlady, devoted and servile servants. The smug, tightly-structured world of the British in Victorian India all but obscures the exotic possibilities of the setting; only the holy monkeys and the hired help remind the reader that he's in the Orient. A standard plot in a narrow world.
