With many books relating to anti-Semitism in America behind them, this team of Anti-Defamation League staff directors have now updated and reoriented their 1964 study of right wing movements in America. While Dagger on the Right was a broad-based inventory of the entire right-wing spectrum, their new study concentrates on the sociological and political aspects of the right-wing phenomena, with particular emphasis being directed to the role of the John Birch Society as the mother church of reactionary extremism. Another marked difference that separates the earlier study from the new work is the decreased attention paid to the civil-rights movement as the propellant of the right-wing animus, with the Vietnam war taking over as the root issue for its keyed-up patriotism. Incontestably, the authors of the present study have continued their homage to democratic politics by maintaining a state of aroused scrutiny for those groups in America who scorn the complexities of modern society and yearn for the simplisms that have never existed.
