The voyages of the Beagle are generally associated in people's minds with the outcome in Darwin's Origin of Spe But another scientific experiment enlivened the expeditions back in the 1830's, as Commander Fitz-Roy dedicated himself to the capture of natives, of whom one was Jemmy Button, and the attempt to impose civilization, so-called, on Fueglans. Darwin was a relatively minor figure. And it all adds up to an unusual story, not without its frank commentary on the ills of society, and what both sides suffered.
