ADAM SMITH GOES TO SCHOOL

The photographer/author of Don't Feel Sorry for Paul, Connie's New Eyes, and other photovisits with special children, here documents a normal boy's early days in a normal first-grade classroom--so normal, it's dull. Wolf follows Adam and the others as they read for Mrs. Young, listen to her definitions of the equal and plus signs, act up to the circus music at the weekly music appreciation class, match colored strips in their math workbooks to ""get a better understanding of metric measurement,"" build in the block corner (true to many classrooms even yet, it's all male), paint pictures in the art corner, etc. ""School is a pretty good place,"" says Adam back home, as his family admires his pictures, and there isn't much more to say. Wolf's introduction to classroom routine might serve as a preview for apprehensive or just curious first-graders-to-be, but it's probably all too ordinary to engage anyone who's already made the scene.
