THE DAYS OF OFELIA

This was reported last January; postponed to Fall as Book-of-the-Month Club co-selection with The Raft. This is not a book about the war! Welcome news for all who need worthwhile writing, of contemporary interest, that is not a war book.... Eminently readable, this is an unusual approach to sympathetic understanding of current Mexican problems and people. Ofelia, ten year old daughter of the Escotos, won her battle to become the author's maid, and it was through that opening wedge that Miss Diament penetrated the Mexican facade. One shares with her the market, the customs, the gossip, the family life of the Escotos. One visits a wedding, old style. One shares the horror and sorrow when the stigma of ""Jew"" follows certain German refugees to their new home. A book which will appeal to anyone who has been, or is going, to Mexico. And for those to whom Mexico is merely a postponed dream, this will be another inducement.
