DOGS THAT WORK FOR A LIVING

Someday someone will write a truly adult book about the intricate and marvellous psychology of the working dog in action, but this is merely a patchwork culled from, one would suspect, breed ""standards"" (which indulge in the sunny hyperbole of seed catalogues). The thirty breeds covered here do not follow the necessarily arbitrary AKC Working Dog classification but generally represent dogs used for heavy or crafty work in rural areas or for guard duty. The Sporting Group and Terriers (except for the Schnauzer) are not included in spite of their sterling work in predator and pest control. Each breed is described by the standards (always depressing for owners of adored, undersized, overbred Collies or droopy tailed Boxers); and a bit of history and sycophantic remarks about general character are thrown in.
