HARRIET READS SIGNS AND MORE SIGNS

Against the series' usual flat, simple designs and poster-paper colors, elephant Harriet roller skates across town (but often looks like she's just walking), diligently observing all the traffic and other signs along the way. She sees DON'T WALK and waits for the green WALK before crossing, she goes ""another way"" on encountering a DETOUR sign, stops on the sidewalk when passing a big house with a KEEP OFF THE GRASS sign, and so on. There are stops at a BAKERY, U.S. MAIL, and ICE CREAM truck before Harriet arrives at her destination, an odd little structure cutely and unrealistically equipped with the sign GRANDMA'S HOUSE. It might serve as a preparation for straight reading or street- and town-crossing, but this has less story, less learning-content, and less style than other Maestro word-concept books.
