The language of buds is an important key to the identification of trees and shrubs and one of the few botanical hobbies that can be practiced in the winter. Packed with detailed explanations of the basic terminology and examples of common American plants, the clear text and drawings offer the sort of intermediate level descriptive botany that's still hard to Find. Unfortunately Davis overindulges in paeans to ""these tiny gems"" protected by bud scales that are like ""firmly closed doors to snug little houses"" -- ""Roads that wind through wintry woods contain a multitude of surprises."" Gushy, but still a useful preface to comprehensive field guides.
