STEPHANIE LANE: Editorial Secretary

Stephanie Lane is a pretty lucky girl: a few weeks in New York City and she has a good job, an apartment, a roommate and a boyfriend; even when her father's heart attack threatens to force her return to Smalltownsville, her brother steps in and saves the day. Despite this unrelievedly optimistic point of view, college grad Stephanie's responsible and challenging job of editorial secretary on a small trade magazine is believable, as are the tensions and intrigues among the sympathetically-drawn office staff. Following our secretary through a few days at work is a painless way to get acquainted with editorial procedures, but following her at home is less educational: young girls reading about the lucky Miss Lane will be forewarned to equip themselves with steno and typing but not fore-armed against the frustration and loneliness often facing a stranger in Manhattan.
