REDWOOD PIONEER

A different type of pioneering, this, in a simple chronicle of an Irish family in California half a century ago. The O'Grady's left their potato farm in northern California to go into the tanbark trade in the redwoods near Santa Cruz. Mikey, of an inquiring mind with the bent of a naturalist, sees and learns -- often the hard way- as his family heads south. They settle --and Mikey is left alone to have an encounter with a grizzly- and-to meet a real naturalist who helps open his eyes to the future he can pursue.
