BELINDA AND ME

The pages are tinted a pinkish orange, glaceed with sugary verses like ""Belinda likes to have me come to play/ and spend the day and share her books and toys./ We're very sad at good-by time./ Sometimes she cries"" then topped off with swiftly outlined ink sketches. The hollow refrain ""--and so do I"" follows each of the free verse stanzas, which manage to make the most obvious forms of child paly seem completely unenticing. The illustrations are vague and under-detailed for the young audience for whom the book is designed.
