THE NAMES AND TITLES OF JESUS

Father Sabourin, a highly respected theologian and scriptural scholar and Professor of Scripture at the Institut Biblique in Jerusalem, in this work traces biblical themes connected with the name of Jesus in order to arrive at a precise idea of Jesus' identity and mission. The five parts of the book correspond to the five categories of such names: the human names, the simple Messianic titles, the communal Messianic titles, the soteriological titles, and the properly Christological titles. Sabourin's approach is not a new one, but it is unique in that it applies to an old formula the advances in the scriptural and auxiliary sciences of recent years; the result is an interesting and valuable work, but one which will appeal, for the most part, only to the specialist in sacred scripture.
