ELLA

Ella, the elephant-star of a travelling circus, sulks to her disadvantage after she has had to push a wagon out of some mud. The circus travels away by rail, leaving a bewildered elephant behind. Ella chances to wander on to a farm where she tosses down almost a whole stack of hay at once. The farmer, one Lucifer Kirk, turns out to be a crank who owns a lonely hound. He uses the ready elephant power to plow fields, mow his lawn, gather eggs, feed the pigs and water the flowers. Ella works sadly for one year until she hears the circus train. She breaks down the barn and escapes through the woods back to her old post. After her unspoiling process, she readily joins in the work of carrying and loading. Although words are now and then forced in, Mr. Peet's rhymes are comical and fast moving as usual. His full color art work-- all double spreads-- has the kind of clarity and obvious humor which the listening circle enjoys.
