CHAMPIONS OF THE INDIANAPOLIS 500: The Men Who Have Won More Than Once

To Indy and after with eight repeat winners whose careers span the history of the world's top-drawing, top-paying auto race. Feuding Tommy Milton (1921, 1923) and former sidekick Ralph Murphy (1922) dueled on the track and refused to speak to each other off it; but when Murphy cracked up, Milton cried. Wilbur Shaw (1937, 1939, 1940) won his first victory on his last drops of oil; Mauri Rose (1941, 1947, 1948) took his as a dark-horse relief driver. At forty A. J. Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967) is still gunning for number four. ""But it's a sport of speed and no matter how smart you get, when you slow down you've got to get out."" The advice comes from Mauri Rose, one of many who have their say here. Libby, a repeater himself (A. J. Foyt, 1974), keeps this one tight, fast and on course.
