To be rookie goalie is the dream of young Canadian boys who lack potential as skaters, and Gerry Desjardins is one who made it--with the Los Angeles Kings in 1968-69. However this deals not only with his freshman year in detail but also explains understandingly what it's like to be a novice responsible for carrying a pro team. Gerry made it the way most Canadians do, gradually up through the ranks with a few breaks, worried parents, marriage. His ability is touted but not that of his teammates (some of whom made it big); their names are listed just as extraneously as the weights and costs of equipment. Nevertheless the only serious handicap is the break of momentum by irrelevant happenings. All in all, a routine assist.
