ROD CAREW: Master Hitter

A master singles hitter in a game currently mesmerized by power and a player known for his temperamental threats of retirement, Rod Carew might seem to be a touchy candidate for sports hero fame. On the contrary, Libby will have you admiring both Carew's style at the plate and the individualism that brought him into an enviably happy interracial marriage. The careless editing that often mars Sports Shelf entries is evident as ever, but Libby is still a good enough talker to rate an inning's worth of attention.
