INTERSTATE

This is ostensibly a novel about the saving of Blackwater Swamp, a last little retreat for the ivory-billed woodpecker, threatened by an interstate highway. But actually it's a chance for Mr. Deal to splatter the sex lives and emotional hangups of his character all over the impending asphalt. Roxy is the woman who owns the Swamp and is out to save it in the face of her husband, Bob, who wants to let the highway go through and develop the area in the hope of building up his masculinity. George Beatty is on Roxy's side. He's an aging, ex-alcoholic who has found solace in social commitment to his adopted small town. . . a town that will die out unless the highway swings its way. Opposing her is Drew Kyler, an engineer who sees the swamp as a marvelous challenge. But he and the rest are also challenged by Roxy as WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER FOUND HER MAN. In fact a sneaky government agent tries to prove that she's a lesbian. And then when she lets those HIPPIES help with the cause. . . . There's a lot of dead wood on this road in soft-shouldered prose.
