Mr. Smith has previously presented Japan (1964) and Spain (1966) in the same format: booklength text with copious illustrations. His text does not cover the artistic legacy, rather attempts to cope with the history of peoples, civilizations, politics from the projected migration from Asia through the Indian civilizations, the Conquest, to the modern era. It is a simplistic job, which reads easily rather than well, but it does cover the Mexican territory at a popular level. There is a simultaneous historic and artistic chronology. The legacy is here, all right, in the illustrations in full color of pottery and paintings, statues and scenes, art and artifacts which provide the feature attraction of a handsome book.
