Charles Crighton's attempt to reconcile the many equivocal and enigmatic circumstances which concern his wife, Mary Sutherland, lead him to suspect that she was also known was Maria Kreuzinger, the ""angel of Zorndorf"", after her rescue of a number of the victims of the Jewish massacres from the extermination pits. Charles, knowing that Mary had once been married to the German, Otto, faces her reluctance to discuss the past, and there are certain discrepancies which puzzle him. A letter finally forces her to talk and she reveals her marriage to the man who became a Nazi and betrayed his brother-in-law, Kurt, to the Gestapo; her rescue of Kurt- whom she found in the pits- and her return to salvage others; and Finally her murder- of her husband... A melodrama, a little unlikely, which does not subdue the heroic and tragic circumstances on which it is based.... The prose is full.
