ISFENDIAR AND THE WILD DONKEYS

The wild donkeys, the fleet wild donkeys. Supple backed, sure of foot, they ranged the inhospitable wastes, invisible to slow-footed man. In their noble heads"" ...and so on, in a long, lugubrious prose-poem strewn with proverbs and oracular utterances. The donkeys are the dream of Isfeadiar, a young Iranian goatherd, who proves his sagacity and attains manhood by catching one of the legendary animals and turning it over to a zoo. The ponderous style and dull, self-important story rob the locality of its color.
