PERILOUS PASSAGE

It's 1940 and a taciturn, when not grumpy, Basque shepherd is paid to escort a prominent Jewish professor and his family over the mountains, with the SD (worse than the SS) and the Wehrmacht not far behind. The wife walks to her deliberate death in the snow; the youngsters disparage their father who has placed a priority on intellect although he adds a philosophical defense thereof; they all take cover with the gypsies, one of whom will betray them; they are cleared by the gunfire of a brave man; and at the end--trapped by the Germans--some wild dogs make ground round out of them. Right from the Fabrik to the big screen almost without touching human hands--it's toneless trudgery and very noble of mien.
