Lost in an immense unexplored cave, alone and without light or clock-- one day seemed a week in Matt's frightened, disoriented mind before his best friend, the fat but brainy Spotty, deduces where he is and comes to rescue him. The trauma of those terrifying hours when his body seemed to come apart and float away from him destroys Matt's self-confidence and his get-rich-quick scheme to stake a claim for the cave and develop it as a tourist attraction. Estranged from Spotty and turned in on himself in bitter self-recrimination, Matt is finally jolted into action by the descent into the cave of myopic, badly-coordinated Spotty followed by the villain Kurt. With the three underground, the rest is pure adventure, physically and psychologically, as they struggle for six-and-a-half days to control their fear and find a way out. The vivid reality of the sensations of blindness, isolation, and displacement is marred by the stereotyped characters and a superficiality of attitude which pits hillbilly vs. town boy, outdoor skills vs. indoor brains, rich vs. poor. Poor in conception but rich in involvement.
