SECRETS

Arcadia i.e., Peyton Place-- is a small suburb near Westport, Connecticut, where four of its women are raped and battered to death. A fifth one, the wife of a disgruntled man, survives; whereas there are at least two others who surge with uncontrollable urges. Loukas, a detective with a sad personal history--the loss of a daughter and wife--presides over a number of assorted citizens: a Diplomate in Psychiatry who yields to an importunate patient, a sculptor, a blackmailing woman with a slut of a daughter, etc., etc. Besides the rape cum murder, or just rape cum sex, there's a great deal of the ""naked and squirmy"" latter. You wonder whether whoever thought up that metaphor about sex rearing its ugly head meant it to be taken so literally.
