A collector's itemizing of a country, admittedly sometimes awkward to visit, turns out to be a definitely seductive travel book. For their personally conducted auto tour is a friendly one, as observant of the varieties of flowers as of museums and churches, as interested in landscapes as in people, and as instructive about azulejos (glazed tiles) and Manueline architecture as roads, distances and lodgings. With a briefing of Portuguese history, they cover Lisbon and its environs, the country around the Tagus, the Alentejo, Southern Portugal, the Estremadura, Minho, Madeira and the Azores, with always an untired eye for the startling and the lovely, and an enquiring mind focussed on tradition, local skills and regional characteristics, and are never unappreciative of the friendliness and courtesy everywhere. Their course is aimed at the patient and sympathetic traveller, who should also be enterprising and quite hardy, but it is made to sound most attractive and worthwhile.
