In her first hard-cover, the author of the ""Kobie"" books has produced another formula story. At 12, Jackie and her friend Natalie yearn to be part of the ""I Like Boys Club,"" whose members wear pink and giggle a lot. Jackie carries on an incessant and inane war with her 15-year-old sister, Sharon; as might be expected, the war subsides when Sharon suggests that Jackie form her own club and include boys. Ransom's relentless prose is underlined with explanations of the obvious: ""It suddenly occurred to Jackie that Sharon had bleached her hair to impress Mick Rowe, to reinvent herself much the way Jackie attempted to become Somebody by changing her own hairstyle. She was stunned by the revelation""--but few readers will be stunned. Do kids want to read about boy-crazy, affluent pubescents with ineffectual parents, limited wit, and no charm? It would be a comfort to believe that Jackie and her friends are merely fantasies, and that young people will fail to identify with them.
