Acknowledging that dialogue between the Orthodox and the Protestant branches of Christendom have been taking place for the past twenty years, the author hopes to uncover a deeper level for encounter and for further conversations between the two, in the light of future developments. The expansion of Orthodoxy to all parts of the world, its rise as a significant sector of American religious life, and its adherence to the World Council of Churches, with significant consequences, are among the reasons why this purpose can claim importance. Although the book does not aim to treat the question of Roman Catholic and Orthodox relations, it gives attention to this at points where Roman Catholic-Protestant dialogue moves to a larger ecumenism. The author's method is to describe primary Orthodox doctrines and positions, through historical tracings or their development, their embodiment in liturgy, and the like; and then to relate parallel Protestant teachings to these doctrines. The nature of the Church, the Trinity, the structure of the Church, its ministry and laity are among the topics treated. Intended as a possible text for university and theological seminary courses, this book should be informative for many church leaders. Through written as a thorough piece of scholarship, it is also quite readable via its clear style and organization.
